Governance and licensing
FleetAMP is an independent, maintainer-led community project. It is not an official OpenTelemetry project.
How decisions are made
Focused fixes and documentation changes proceed through pull requests. Larger changes should begin with a design issue, especially when they affect public APIs, persistence, authorization, approval separation, protocol compatibility or data integrity. Maintainers make final release and security decisions after considering contributor and user feedback.
The current participation model includes users, contributors, recurring reviewers and maintainers. These roles do not imply employment or a commercial support entitlement.
Current license: Apache 2.0
FleetAMP code and documentation are licensed under Apache License 2.0. It permits use, modification, redistribution, forks and commercial use when its copyright, license and notice requirements are followed. It also includes an express patent grant from contributors.
Apache 2.0 supports broad enterprise adoption and integration, but it does not require a modified distribution or hosted FleetAMP service to publish its source code. Open source also cannot allow community contribution while prohibiting every fork.
Why the license is not being changed silently
GPLv3 would require source availability for distributed derivative works; AGPLv3 would additionally address modified software offered over a network. Those licenses provide stronger reciprocity but can reduce adoption by organizations with restrictive open-source policies.
FleetAMP remains Apache-2.0 for v0.2.0. Any proposal to adopt GPL, AGPL or a dual-license model must be a separate, explicit decision covering contributor consent, existing releases, dependency compatibility, trademarks and inbound contribution terms. Documentation updates do not themselves relicense code.
Contributions and project identity
Accepted contributions are provided under Apache-2.0; no Contributor License Agreement is currently required. The license permits forks, but it does not permit a materially different fork to claim that it is an official FleetAMP or OpenTelemetry release or that it is endorsed by project maintainers.
